Fred Singer … Like father. Like son.
It was evident from an early age that Fred Singer had a keen interest in fashion. Not surprising since his father was responsible for bringing high-end men's fashion to Alberta. No question then that Fred would head the family business his father established. Fred officially joined the family business 1968. In 1977, he became president of Henry Singer.
Times changed since his father opened the business in 1938. Fred's first major undertaking was to consolidate and redefine all of the Henry Singer stores into one new store with a global merchandising vision. Regular trips to Europe helped establish new suppliers and lasting friendships. In turn, Fred was the first retailer to bring major brands like Hugo Boss and Armani Collezioni to Canada. The Henry Singer flagship store in Manulife Place in Edmonton is a testament to the evolution of the Singer brand.
And just like his father was, Fred is very active in the community, on both a professional and personal level. For many years, he was part of the Young Presidents' Organization and for years Henry Singer sponsored the Alberta Open. Today, Henry Singer raises funds for charities through the annual North-South Golf Challenge, continues to support the United Way and in 1991 created the Henry Singer Award in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Retailing and Services at the University of Alberta.
