After all, one of his passions is developing staff, and helping them find the energy, passion and enjoyment he feels on the job. "I get excited about developing leaders and helping them fulfill their career ambitions, even if they are only with us for a few years." It was while working in public practice that Larry developed an interest in the retail and fashion sector, initially through clients, and then as part-owner of a high-end men's fashion store in Calgary. "Eventually, Henry Singer Fashion Group was looking for a senior financial person, and after I had some conversations with the company president, Fred Singer, I decided to join. I liked the heritage of the company, and the corporate culture-honesty, integrity, respect and open communication. As a family business, the company is also very supportive of a balanced lifestyle and family values, and that is important to me." Today, Larry's role has expanded into the operations side, with both store managers and back-line managers (such as IT, accounting and distribution) all reporting to him. "While we are in the clothing business, our core purpose is to help our customers be successful through clothing and image, whether it's someone just out of university going for their first interview, a young CA or lawyer who wants to move up the corporate ladder, or someone who just wants to look great out on the town or on the golf course." In 2004, Henry Singer Fashion Group was recognized by the Retail Council of Canada as the country's Most Innovative Independent Retailer of the Year-an impressive feat for a 67-year-old company, and one that would certainly be impossible without the efforts of passionate, dedicated people like Larry.
